This build includes new VNC Thumbnails View implementation. It has been developed from scratch. The new VNC Thumbnails View uses much less CPU% comparing to the previous versions. It also allows resizing of thumbnail items up to 512x512 pixels. Click here for more information.

VNC Thumbnails View Gen 2

The VNC Manager was the first application to introduce VNC thumbnails view. The v5.0 offers by far the best VNC Thumbnails view implementation available today.

One of the most frequent feature requests that we are hearing is to ability to resize VNC thumbnail items larger than 256x256 pixels. The reason for the 256x256 limitation in the v5.0 implementation is because the VNC thumbnails view is based on the Windows ListView control, which cannot show icons larger than 256x256.

Another popular request is ability to 100+ items with reasonable CPU usage. Both of these requests are going to be addressed in the next 5.5.5.0 build. We are in process of rewriting VNC thumbnails view from scratch. Windows ListView control has been replaced by our own in-house build component. So the 256x256 limitation is going to be thing of the past. For now we are going artificially limit the maximum size of the VNC Thumbnails View items to 512x512. But depending on the customers feedback this number could be increased.

With regards of the reduced CPU usage, this has been addressed as well. The screenshot below show the new VNC thumbnails view with more than 120 items added. In the CPU usage as shown on the screenshot is only around 15-20%. How cool is that?!

When the v5.5.5.0 releases next week we would be really interested to hear what you think about our new VNC Thumbnails View Gen 2.

I just downloaded this version. When viewing one of our machines it looks like the color depth is a cross between 64 and 256 when it should be true color. I have another machine with version 5.0.17 and it views correctly.

Logged On Users

It looks like this function will report who is logged into the phycial machine. Will it be possiable to see who is viewing the workstation using VNC. We keep some of our workstations logged in all the time. Then use VNC to view them. Our problem is we never know who else is viewing the box using VNC. It would be nice to see this information in the window that the "Logged On Users" is. Thanks

I can't seem to see any "logged on users" since putting on the 64 bit beta. It looks to me like it's a bug, because it used to work fine. What is extra suspicious looking is that it still shows me "ping failed" for ones that are off, and in some cases, I'm seeing a "an exception occurred during a Ping request"....but the machines that are actually on, are blank in the column. No error listed - just blank.

VNC viewer performance improvements in the 5.5.2.0 build

The next 5.5.2.0 build will include an improved version of the VNC viewer. The new VNC viewer includes support for Ultra and Cache encoding as well as ability to use 64 and 8 color palettes. But one of the most notable improvements is the lower CPU usage comparing to the previous versions.

In both tests exactly the same settings were used with 5 thumbnail items been added to the thumbnails view. As you can see v5.0.17.1 uses 26% of the CPU time while v5.5.2.0 uses only 11%.

You will see similar performance improvements when you use the VNC Manager's built-in VNC viewer.

We plan to release v5.5.2.0 build by the end of this week.

SmartCode VNC Manager v5.5 Early Technology Program Has Started!

At this time we release 64-bit build of the VNC Manager (Enterprise Edition). The v5.5.1.0 Technology Preview build has the same features as the stable v5.0.16.2 build, but was compiled to run as a 64-bit application. The next v5.5.2.0 build will be available in 32-bit and 64-bit forms and will include several new features for you to test.
